The 14th Star, Vermont

Thirteen original states stood together under a new flag: thirteen stripes and thirteen stars—a new constellation of freedom. For 14 years, Vermont governed itself as an independent republic. After resolving competing land claims with New York through a negotiated settlement—including a payment of thirty thousand dollars—Vermont officially joined the United States on March 4, 1791. Vermont became the 14th state—and the first state admitted after the original thirteen.

Even before statehood, Vermont copper coins carried the Latin words Stella quarta decima—“The Fourteenth Star”—representing Vermont’s hope of joining the Union.

Today, Vermont’s official Latin motto carries that history forward: Stella quarta decima fulgeat. “May the 14th star shine bright.” That proud Vermont history inspired the 14th Star collection supporting Gerald Malloy for Congress.

Gerald Malloy is a West Point graduate, retired Army officer, husband, father, and decorated veteran who served our country for 22 years on active duty. Now Gerald is ready to serve Vermont in Congress—with common sense, balanced leadership, and a deep love for our state and country.

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, let’s honor where we came from—and work together for a brighter future.

Vermont was America’s 14th star. Together, let’s make it shine bright again.
